In 2018 Emerald help a careers day at OIAM, a group of ten Emerald employees visited the school for the day and held sessions with the Year 7 group about planning for their future careers. We talked through basic CV’s and helped them think about their own skills, we hosted job interviews with each pupil to apply for an ‘Emerald job’, each job role had a job description and certain skills were needed for the roles, these were based on the different Emerald departments.
In 2019 a group of Emerald employees went back to the OIAM school for another careers day. They held a similar session as to in 2018 but with year 9 pupils this time, giving them career skills and advice.
Visit to the Bingley Office
A group of year 10 pupils visited the Bingley office in 2019 and the staff showed them around the premises and organised for representatives from each department to come and speak to them about what happens in that department. The pupils were given the opportunity to ask any questions they wanted to find out more about career prospects.
‘Colleagues from the Mentoring Programme loved having the opportunity and it was a rewarding experience’
Emerald has provided OIAM with a mentoring scheme whereby employees visited the school and mentored small groups of the school children. Emerald built on their partnership with OIAM through this mentoring Programme featuring CEO Vicky Williams, Sales Director Shariq Mumtaz, and Melissa Fojt, Head of Community Partnerships. The year after there was a second Mentoring Programme with seven colleagues from Emerald and eighteen students from OIAM in an 6-week programme which ended in them visiting the office for World Book Day celebrations. The mentors helped students look at different career paths and options for the future and created an invaluable experience and guidance for the students.
Nick Dent one of the mentees said:
“Taking part in the mentor programme has been brilliant and I feel like I have taken loads from the experience. My three mentees were a pleasure to work with, all incredibly polite and grateful for my time and showed a great willingness to learn and ask questions. They all really impressed me and I know they’ll go onto brilliant futures. On top of that, all the students I interacted with on the programme showed great manners and respect. If it wasn’t for their commitment and dedication it wouldn’t have been a success so huge thanks to all the students involved”
