A wider impact in our communities
Acting as a responsible business is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring the company has a positive impact within our communities, local and global. We believe in taking responsibility and working collaboratively with our partners, communities and colleagues.
Emerald has a three-pillar approach, with each pillar aligning to a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, to support the current global challenges:
Partnering for Positive Change – Supporting SDG 4 & 17
- Developing long-term partnerships to support social mobility, inclusivity and the growth and development of people.
- Our Charities of the Year are the National Literacy Trust, One in a Million Free School and the Social Enterprise Academy
Empowering People to become ‘work ready’ – Supporting SDG 8
- We aim to provide soft skills tools and resources to people who want to get back into the workplace.
Supporting Under Represented Voices – Supporting SDG 4 & 17
- Actively seeking ways to support diversity and inclusion by building inclusive products and services and supporting local voices, in every Emerald location.
Emerald’s Charities of the Year
We are passionate about supporting charities, foundations and organisations that link to Emerald’s core business purpose. In 2020, Emerald is supporting three charities focussed on developing Education in low income areas:
In 2019, we raised £20,000 for our Charities of the Year and dedicated over 1, 100 hours to our communities through volunteering and fundraising initiatives.
We encourage colleagues to make a difference
We recognise that our colleagues' passion goes above and beyond the day job and we want to give them opportunities to get involved in ways they can create a bigger impact. Whether it’s taking part in our volunteering programmes, charity work or just taking advantage of the many development and mentoring schemes here at Emerald, participation and involvement is always encouraged. Each employee, regardless of location has two volunteering days to use per annum on an activity of their choice – we also have an Emerald Volunteering Day!

The Emerald Foundation
The Emerald Foundation, the charitable arm of Emerald Group, was established in 2008 by the owner, Keith Howard OBE, who wished to support charities in West Yorkshire where the company was founded.
C-19 Business Pledge
Emerald strives to act responsibly throughout all our operations and policies and aims to work with local communities to support organizations and charities through this unprecedented time.

Virtual Fundraising Day for the Association of NHS Charities
During the Covid-19 pandemic whilst employees were in lockdown on we decided to host our first virtual fundraising day on the 6th of May for Emerald Group employees across our global network raising £1,454 for the NHS Charities Together.
Emerald Publishing and One In A Million
The Emerald Publishing office in Bingley have been working with One In A Million (OIAM) free school since 2018 and they are now one of Emerald’s charity partners of 2020. Emerald have worked with OIAM on different education days and mentoring schemes within the local community.

Caring about the environment goes beyond the pages of a policy document
We strive to be an environmentally responsible company. ‘Think Green’ raises awareness and embeds working practices that safeguard the environment and encourage a sustainability friendly mindset, both locally and globally. Our four main initiatives include:
- Promoting reuse, reduce and recycling, especially our plastic waste
- Reducing our C02 emissions
- Improving awareness and understanding at an individual and company level
- Empowering colleagues to get involved in environmental projects that benefit our community socially and economically
“Emerald strives to make a positive impact around the world. For more than fifty years, our ethos has been to make a difference through connecting research and practice to make a difference to real world problems, as well as taking responsibility and working collaboratively with our partners, communities and colleagues, both locally and globally.
Looking ahead, we will continue to partner for positive change, lead in being a fair and transparent employer and support under represented voices, while aligning our mission to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
We are Emerald, and we’ve always been about that, genuinely caring about doing the right things to build a better, more sustainable future for everybody.”
